Excel Addin Gets Greyed out; User had to force close it to come out of the Excel.
Applies to
11x;12x
Solution
This issue appears when the Skype registry entries conflict with the Excel Add in.
Add-in was working fine after uninstalling the Skype.
See below steps or attached document for the steps that need to be performed in order to get rid of the error.
- Uninstall Skype for Business from the machine.
- Restart the machine.
- Launch Excel and verify the Add-in
- Open one script/file and do the test run.
- Add-in should not be greyed out after any action. If it’s not grey’s out after uninstalling the Skype
- We need to install the Skype For Business from the following path:
- Restart the machine.
- Launch the excel file and verify the scenario again and share the feedback with us.
Notes:
This issue occurs when Skype for Business 2016 Basic installation creates a registry key for Office 2016. Skype for Business 2016 Basic is released with some basic Office 2016 components, but it does not come with Mso.dll. This issue is not only affecting Winshuttle products but also affecting products of other organizations e.g. Microsoft (Word mail merge, kindly refer to https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/3178867/word-mail-merge-doesn-t-work-after-you-install-skype-for-business-basi) and IBM http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21992629 etc.
As per recommendation from above links, there are only 2 solutions for this, either install Skype for Business Basic stand-alone client (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3139711/how-to-install-the-skype-for-business-basic-stand-alone-client) or as per Microsoft recommendation remove registry keys which can kept on re-appearing after any updates of Skype, so it is advised to distribute this action through a Group Policy object (GPO) to make sure that the key is removed after future updates are applied
