"Object reference reference error" when trying to open Studio in a Foundation environment

Description

When attempting to open Studio in a Foundation environment, you receive an "Object reference" error.
  • Take an Application Trace for Studio, by modifying the AppOptions.xml and changing the value for false to true.
  • If the trace shows an entry stating "System.ServiceModel.FaultException: The server was unable to process the request due to an internal error", this is the key indicator that IIS is in a broken state.

Studio 11.x, Foundation 11.x

Cause

IIS hosting the LMS site is in a broken state. It receives the request, but cannot process it.

Solution

Perform an IISRESET on the server hosting LMS. If that does not resolve the issue, restart the server.
